ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in 1954, Gloria D’ credits the creativity behind her work to Native American people, their culture, and spiritual traditions. A self-taught artist and historian, she spent more than 20 years in South Dakota, where she learned through the guidance of tribal elders.

Each of her creations tells a story—recalling events, legends, and the beauty of Plains Indian life. Working across a variety of media, Gloria believes vision is essential to meaningful art. She maintains that creating without vision loses the pride of creation, and without that pride, a piece becomes merely a craft item rather than art.

Gloria’s greatest inspiration came from Frank Fools Crow, to whose memory she dedicates her work. She often reflects on the words of her adopted grandfather: “All honorable men are of the same tribe.”

Inspired by the Sioux, Crow, Shoshoni, and Arapaho peoples of the Great Plains, Gloria strives to honor their artistry, history, and traditions. She uses traditional materials and techniques whenever possible, creating unique handcrafted works that reflect the spirit and design of Northern Plains tribal artisans.

The stories that accompany her work are drawn from tribal oral histories, which often vary by individual experience and vision. Gloria approaches her craft with deep respect for the heritage and enduring legacy of these extraordinary cultures.
